At first glance the Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage and pancake on a stick looks a lot like a corn dog. Then you look closer and you see the telltale signs of breakfast. Aside from the similarity in shape, this product is clearly its own creature.
And what sets this apart from lesser food, is the enthusiasm in which the packaging embraces its inherently synthetic nature. The words “artificial blueberry flavored” take up nearly as much space on the box as the actual name of the product. Looking at this you would believe that the absence of blueberries was a selling point. As if people were constantly in danger of blueberry overdoses. The “flavored” in question makes great strides in the impressionistic interpretation of fruit. The pancake-like part of the product is filled with tiny little flakes of blue gel. By making the blueberry emulators much smaller than actual blueberries, Jimmy Dean gives the observer the impression that his stick-sausage is much larger than it actually is. And considering the 240 calories per item, we can’t afford for it be any larger.
